Winged warrior angel full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The sleeve shows a winged warrior angel with a sword and armour, set against soft cloud formations, with two classical statue-like figures running down towards the forearm. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast in the feathers, armour and stone textures. The image is a five-panel collage of the same arm, all in black and grey ink.

Dariusz had the left wing half free of the block when the rain started, and he swore at it the way he swore at everything that week. The commission was for a vicar in Wakefield who wanted the churchyard archangel back on its plinth before the autumn fête, and the stone had other ideas. Every feather he cleared seemed to reveal another one underneath, and the sword in the raised hand kept threatening to snap at the wrist whenever he went near it with a point.

On the Thursday he found the signature. It sat low on the cloud bank behind the warrior's shoulder, so faint that only raking lamplight showed it: a small curl of letters and a date from 1868. Someone had carved the clouds and then carved his own name into them, the way a boy scratches initials under a bench. The wing was clearly his work, Dariusz realised, and the sword had been botched by whoever came after. No parish record he had read mentioned an apprentice.
He didn't tell the vicar. He spent the next three evenings with a fine chisel and a magnifier, clearing grit from those letters without touching the cloud around them, until the name stood clean in the grey light. Then he wrote the dates of his own four years in the yard on the back of the invoice, folded it small, and slid it into the hollow of the plinth where the next man to crack it open would have to find it.
On Saturday the archangel went back up in the rain, the sword still bent a little at the wrist, the way the first man had meant it.
