Bee tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small bee is tattooed centrally on the upper back, just below the nape of the neck. The insect is drawn with fine dark outlines, with grey shading on the striped abdomen and soft grey tones across the transparent wings. The background is softly out of focus, and the composition frames the tattoo against bare skin and a white top.

The track was worse than I remembered. Wind came off the snow in long pulls and the mule stopped twice at the scree. At the top, where the cairn is, I opened the box a crack to check the comb, and a single worker walked out onto my wrist, cleaned her antennae the way they do, and then lifted without any fuss into the grey light. I watched her go down towards the larches until I could no longer tell her from the glare.
I have decided I will not tell Mateu about the cage. He would only shake his head and say a queen is not a passport. What matters is that the hives are settled by the stream now, and yesterday I saw wings on the first flowers, pale as ash in the sun.
Write when you can. Tell Papa the goat is still alive, though only just.
