Bee over honeycomb dotwork on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large honeybee sits at the centre of the design, drawn with fine outlines, detailed wing veining and shaded segments on the body. Behind it, a field of hexagonal honeycomb cells and small scattered dotted motifs is built up from stippled dots, giving a soft grey tone. The image is a close, angled photograph of the inner upper arm against a dark background, in black ink and grey only.

Dear Ilse,

The mules went up the Kerschbaumer track on Tuesday with eleven hives roped to their sides, and I walked behind with the smoker because Father's knee would not take the scree. You asked in your last letter whether the bees mind being carried. They do not seem to. By the second bend they were humming again, a low note under the bells, as if they had decided the mountain was simply another field.

We set the hives on the stone shelf above the chapel, where the heather comes in late and the wind keeps the wasps off. Father says the comb up here is built differently, the cells tipped a little, as though the bees are reading the slope. I laid a single frame on the table in the hut and held it to the window. Light came through the wax in a hundred small hexagons, each one filled with a thin grey shadow, and for a moment the whole frame looked like a map drawn by someone who had never seen a road.

The queen is not in the third hive. Franz swears he saw her cross the pass on Thursday, alone, heading west toward the Sulz valley. I told him bees do not travel without the colony. He only shrugged and said that was what the old women said about the swarm that came over in the snow winter, and that it had been right about the rain.

I have left the lid off the third hive. If she comes back, she will find her own comb waiting, and if she does not, the hexagons will still be there in the morning, patient as they always are.

Love, Marta
