Biomechanical leg tattoo shown from three angles

Calf · Colour · Photo

Three side-by-side photographs show a lower leg and foot covered in a biomechanical tattoo of layered mechanical plates, ribbed panels and rounded joints. The shading is smooth and metallic, with highlights and darker recesses that give the plating a three-dimensional look. Bronze and gold tones dominate, with green and purple accents, and the panels wrap around the calf and ankle in each view.

The band at the Lantern Ballroom is already on its third waltz when you fasten the last brass plate above your knee and feel the old gears settle. Mr Ferris at the bar has bet a shilling that the new partner won't last the night. You don't look up. The clasp at your ankle ticks twice, the way it always does before a turn, and you smooth your jacket over the ribbed green panels that run from calf to heel.

Ada Quill comes across the floor with her hair pinned flat and a tin of oil in her handbag, which is how you know she has been listening to the workshop gossip. She says the foreman wants the leg back at the works by Monday. You tell her it was built to dance, not to sit in a crate. She laughs, and the laugh cuts through the saxophone like a file through soft iron.

Then the floor clears and you step out. Each plate takes the lamplight and passes it on, bronze to gold to a bruised violet at the seams, and the couples part without being asked. Your foot finds the beat on the first turn and the second, and on the third you feel the cog in your shin lock true for the first time since the accident on the dock. Ada's fingers tighten on your sleeve.

When the last chord breathes out, Ferris is standing with his shilling in his fist, and nobody says a word about the leg. Ada tucks the oil tin back into her bag and says, "Monday, then." You say, "Monday," knowing you will be back on this floor long before then.
