Biomechanical sleeve on arm and chest
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A shirtless torso and arm show a full sleeve of mechanical components, including a large gear-like disc on the shoulder, panels of plating, and bundled cables. The shading is smooth and highly detailed in greys and browns, with red wires and veins adding colour to the arm and chest. The design wraps from the shoulder down the forearm to the hand, with the chest panel and muscle shapes framing the composition.

The winch on the Marta Vell has been screaming since the tide turned, and the harbourmaster wants it quiet before the night boat leaves. You climb down into the engine hold with a lamp in your teeth and a spanner in your back pocket, and Old Ansel is already there, perched on an upturned crate with his sleeves rolled. He does not look up. He is watching the drum turn with the patience of a man who built it from scrap.

"Cable's fraying where it kisses the sheave," he says. "Same as last spring. Splice it, don't cut it. Cut it and you've got two problems instead of one."
Your fingers are numb from the iron, but you work the strands the way he taught you, laying the grey wire over the copper so the current finds its own road. Ansel talks while you work. He talks about the sheave the way other men talk about difficult wives, with affection and a certain exasperation. The hold smells of tallow and brine, and somewhere above, gulls are squabbling over the fish boxes on the quay.
When the last strand locks, you pull the lever. The drum groans, turns once, and holds. Ansel nods and says nothing, which from him is praise. He gets to his feet slowly, like a gate swinging shut, and tells you the Marta Vell was the first thing he ever fixed in this harbour, and that he has never once let her sail without checking that cable. Then he climbs the ladder, one rung at a time, and leaves you alone with the lamp.
Above, the harbour bell rings the hour. You wipe your hands on your trousers and follow him into the wind, and behind you the winch keeps its quiet, one long copper breath held for the morning tide.
