Black and grey skull and ship sleeve
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless man shows a full arm sleeve with a rose on the shoulder, a sailing ship with rigging above the upper arm, and a large skull with a small star beside it. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast against the dark background. The image is a close side view that crops the face and shows the arm and torso.

The apples had been coming down since before first light, and Ada Pryce counted the thuds from the kitchen window the way her mother had counted stitches. Late August in the orchard above Porthcarrow meant the Bramleys were ready and the wasps were drunk on them. Her grandfather had strung wire between the eldest boughs the summer the Serena came off the slip, so the branches would carry their weight without splitting, and nobody had thought to take it down.

Dan Carrow came up the lane at nine with a ladder on his shoulder and a bottle of scrumpy in his jacket, which was how he had courted her in the first place. He set the ladder against the wall and said the harbour bell had gone twice that morning, which meant the lifeboat was out again. Ada didn't turn round. She was sorting the windfalls into crates, the bruised ones for the pig and the sound ones for the press, and she told him the sale papers were on the table if he wanted to read them before he started picking.
He read them standing up, then folded them into the tin where his father had kept the old chart of the bay. The star scratched on the lid had been cut so deep the paint had gone with it, and under the chart lay a sailor's knot made from tarred twine, tied the way the Serena's crew had tied their bunks. Dan turned it over twice. Ada watched him from the path and thought he looked like a man reading a bill he already knew the sum of.
When she came back at dusk, the ladder was still against the wall and the Bramleys were stripped to their top boughs. Dan had cut the wire free and coiled it neatly on the gatepost. Ada took the coil down, unwound one length, and tied the tarred knot to the nail above the gate. Somewhere below, the harbour bell rang once, and an apple dropped into the long grass.
