Bird dissolving into branches on chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A bird with spread wings is tattooed across the upper chest near the collarbone. Its body and wing feathers break apart into jagged fragments that flow into a bare tree with fine branches at the top right. The work uses solid black and grey shading on pale skin, with the subject centred on the frame and a blue towel visible at the bottom edge.

Mind the sawdust on your shoes and sit nearer the stove, because this one is best told with your knees almost touching. The Gull Pavilion at Saltcombe had a sprung floor of Canadian oak, laid in 1926, and every Saturday the dancers wore it thin with their heels. Above the bandstand lived a grey wood pigeon nobody had invited. Old Ned Carew, who played the fiddle with his eyes shut, swore the bird kept time. When he struck up a waltz, she would drop from the rafters and walk the length of the stage like a bored chaperone.

One November the sea got into the cellar and the whole ballroom groaned for a week. The night the pumps gave up, the pigeon flew straight at the lamps and came apart in the air, feathers loosening like wet paper, and every scrap of her drifted down between the dancers' feet. Nobody saw it but Ned, and Ned said nothing for a year.
When they relaid the boards in spring, the carpenter found the grain running in strange ragged lines, as if someone had stitched a bird into the timber and then unpicked it. Where one plank had split, a twig of green was pushing up through the knot holes, pale and fine as a hair.
So if your heel comes down hard and you hear a crack, don't apologise to the floor. Just dance on and keep the tune slow, because Ned's bird is still counting, and she likes a waltz that lets the branches grow.
