Bird in flight with dreamcatcher on back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large bird with spread wings is shown mid-flight, its beak gripping a dreamcatcher with feathers hanging below it. The wings and body are rendered in soft grey gradients with fine feather detail, and faint curved motion lines sit around the wings. The design runs diagonally across the shoulder blade against a dark background, with the subject's head turned away from the camera.

Dear Ruth, the rook has taken the dreamcatcher again. You will remember the one the pedlar sold Father, the hoop of willow wound with sinew, the feathers he swore were from a real hawk and not a hen. Mother hung it over the kitchen sink to keep the flies off, and it lasted until Tuesday, when the rook came down the chimney flue with a soot-black face and walked off with it under his beak as if he had paid for it.

We followed him up Mill Lane in our slippers. He lifted off the wall by the chapel, wings opening so wide the grey light came through the flight feathers, and for a moment the willow hoop hung from him like a lantern nobody had lit. Mrs Haigh from the bakery shouted that it was a sign. Mr Ashworth said it was a sign the council ought to do something about the chimney sweeps. Neither of them went up after it.
I have decided it is a sign of something, though I can't say what. Perhaps only that the things we are fond of get carried off, and that the carrying can look like flight if you are standing far enough below. Dad would have laughed. He always said the pedlar was half a crow himself.
Write soon, and tell me whether they have windows in Vancouver that a bird can't get through.
Love, Margaret
