Bird made of music notes with Psalm 96:1
Black and grey · Flash
A sketched bird in soft black and grey ink is built from musical staves, notes and a central treble clef, with notes trailing from its wing and tail. The lettering reads Psalm 96:1 at the top and a two-line verse about singing to the Lord at the bottom. The wash-like shading fades toward the edges on a plain pale background.

The anthem sheets had gone yellow in the vestry drawer, so when Wilfred Pask heard the swift singing in the tower that March, he reached for a pencil before his coat was off. The bird was in no hymnal. It rose and fell in a run of notes that climbed the nave like a draught, then dropped away to nothing at the sill of the east window.

Tobias Greave, the youngest treble, was the only one who could hear it clearly from the back pew. "It goes up and then stops like it's forgotten the rest," he whispered in the rehearsal. Pask hummed it back, got the third wrong, and the boy shook his head until the old man laughed and tried again. By Lady Day they had eleven bars copied in pencil across the margin of a psalter, under the heading Psalm 96:1, and the swift had moved its nest from the tower to the lychgate roof.
At Whitsun the choir sang the new song for the first time, and the whole congregation rose on the second verse without being asked. Halfway through, the swift came in through the open west door, circled the candles twice, and settled on the brass eagle of the lectern as if it had been booked for the morning. Nobody stopped singing. Pask kept his arm up and let the bird finish the phrase its own way.
On Monday the psalter lay open at the new tune. The margin was clean, the pencil marks gone, and in their place a single grey feather lay where the treble clef should have been.
