Dilys had already counted the hymn numbers twice when Ifor leaned into the vestry doorway holding a dandelion clock he had plucked from the churchyard wall. "Bride wants the old march," he said. "Says you'll have it by heart."

She did. Her mother had played it at her own wedding in this same chapel, under the same warped treble clef painted above the vestry door. Dilys took the clock from her brother and blew, and the seeds lifted into the sun from the high window, each one turning into a crotchet or a quaver as it drifted down the nave toward the bride's pale, waiting face.

Halfway through the procession the bellows gave out and the organ sighed into silence. Someone in the back pew began to titter. Dilys did not stop. She sang the first line herself, low and steady, the way her mother had, and the congregation, half startled, came in after her. The bride's grandmother held up the order of service, where a line of looping script read don't let them say you ain't beautiful, and she was laughing and crying at once.

Afterwards the vicar called it the finest march he had heard in the parish. Dilys said nothing. She wiped her hands on her skirt and found a single white seed caught in the wool, one small note she had not yet let go of.
