Birdcage and swallow on an upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo shows an ornate domed birdcage with a dark bird perched inside and a second bird flying out through the open side. Below it, a banner of bold lettering reads partly, with only fragments of the words visible where the photo crops the design. The shading is solid on the bird and cage bars with soft grey tones on the cage body, and the composition is centred on the upper arm.

Now sit down, because the sea doesn't wait for anybody, and it didn't wait for old Tobias Crane the winter of the big blow. He kept the Morrow light and a canary in a brass cage on the sill of the lamp room, a little yellow thing called Admiral, because it sang against the foghorn and nothing else would.

That night the lens cracked in its housing and the wick guttered down to a red eye. Tobias climbed the iron stairs with a lantern in one hand and the cage in the other, meaning to set the bird somewhere warm. But the glass was streaming, and the swallows that nested under the gallery rail were shrieking at every gust. Admiral pressed against the bars and would not settle. So Tobias did what a frightened man does. He swung the little door wide and turned his back to light the spare wick.

When he turned round the sill was empty. He found the bird near dawn, not in the wrack or the rocks, but out past the rail, riding the wind beside three swallows and climbing into the black where the beam should have been. The light came back at first grey, lit by his own hands with the cracked lens propped on a crate, and the herring boats came home by it.

Every spring the swallows return to that gallery, and every spring Tobias leaves the cage door open on the sill with a cup of seed inside. He says it is for the bird. I think it is for the sea, which took his wife off the north steps and never sent her back, and which he has decided, after forty years of watching, to call a fair trade. Mind the step on your way down. It's slick with spray.
