Birdcage and blue flowers on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

An open birdcage with an ornate top and a small gem sits at the centre of the design, surrounded by clusters of blue five-petal flowers and dark leaves. Bold black outlines and soft grey shading define the cage, while the flowers carry blue shading. Fine dotted chains hang from the cage and flowers, and the composition fills the thigh with the design centred on the skin.

Dear Mam, the abbot has finally let the goldsmith's cage out of the sacristy, and I am writing this at the cellarer's table with the lamp turned low so no one sees me waste oil. You will remember the siskin the infirmarer's nephew caught in the orchard hedge. Brother Cuthbert had the smith fashion her a house of wire and gilt, with a little crown of scrollwork and a red glass stone set at its peak, so that she might sing for the chapter at Vespers. She never sang. She sat on the perch and looked at the bars the way the novices look at the clock.

Yesterday I was sent to clear the drain beyond the herb garden, and there, in the crack where the mortar has gone, grew a cluster of forget-me-nots, so blue they hurt to look at. I picked a sprig to put in the cage, and when I came back the door was swinging on its hinge, left unlatched after the Office by somebody too tired to notice.

I will not tell you I opened it on purpose. I will tell you the bird sat a long while with the flowers hanging over the rim and the dew catching on the wire, and then she hopped to the threshold, looked at me as if I owed her an apology, and went out over the wall into the orchard. Cuthbert has not yet noticed. I have pressed the sprig between the pages of my missal, where it will keep.

Pray for me, and for the bird, who had more sense than any of us. Your son, Edwin
