Birds and foliage on an upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey sleeve-style tattoo covers the outer upper arm, showing a toucan-like bird, a parrot-like bird, a small songbird and leafy branches linked by fine lines. The linework is clean and sketchy, with soft grey shading filling the leaves and bird bodies. The design runs vertically along the arm against a dark red background.

The toucan came down the back wall every morning at seven, when Mr Abernethy was still in his dressing gown and pretending not to watch from the kitchen window. He wanted the figs. I wanted him gone before Captain woke, because the parrot never woke quietly and the whole street would know the day had started.

Abernethy had kept birds in the glasshouse since before the war, and when his eyes went he handed me the keys and a list written in pencil. Water the ferns. Mind the little brown one, she won't eat unless the branch is moving. Don't let Captain near the tomatoes. The list was longer than the garden. I learned to read the birds by their feet: the toucan gripped, the parrot climbed with his beak, and the songbird only sang when someone whistled back to her from the far side of the wire.
In October the lines between the perches began to sag, so we spent an afternoon with a ladder and a coil of galvanised wire, threading each bird to the next branch so that when one shifted the others swayed. He laughed at how it looked like a drawing he'd once seen, every bird tangled in a single thread. 'Nobody can cage them that way,' he said. 'They can only pass the line along.'
The last morning I found the toucan on the highest leaf, facing the house, his bill bright orange against the grey sky. Captain was silent. The songbird had stopped singing. I whistled once across the glass and waited, and from the far end of the wire, very faint, came the answer. I left the keys on the potting bench, and the wire still hummed when I walked out past the gate.
