Wave and mountains geometric forearm tattoo
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo on the forearm shows a curling wave above layered horizontal lines, set beneath a small mountain range, with triangles, overlapping circles and star-like marks around it. Thin single lines and fine dotwork build the shapes, with light shading in the wave and circles. The design is in black ink and greys on pale skin, arranged vertically along the arm.

Dear Tom,

The chart table in the back room of the Ferris Street office has gone to pieces since you left, but I have kept your compass where you put it, pinned under the tide tables. Mr Hollis says the harbour board wants the breakwater drawn to scale by Friday, and I have been up past midnight with a fine nib and a bottle of Indian ink, trying to make the sea sit still on paper.
Here is the trouble. Every wave I draw comes out looking like a mountain that has lost its nerve. I tried it your way, the way you showed me on the back of the Llanberis postcard, with the peaks first and the water folded beneath them like a sheet on a line. Hollis ran his thumb across it and said it looked like a hat. So last night I gave up on the sea and drew circles instead, one inside another, the way the sun comes up over the bay when the fog lifts, and I put three little stars in the gaps where the bearings cross.
Then something odd happened. When I laid the circles over the wave, the curl of it fell exactly into the first ring, and the peaks sat on the horizontal lines as if they had been waiting for them. I sat there a long while. Nobody told me the sea could be measured like that, and I am not sure I believe it yet.
I am sending this with the drawing folded inside. Keep the stars for me. If the breakwater holds, I will come up on the train at Easter and we can argue about whether it is a hat.
Yours, Jack
