Birds on a wire along a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black wire runs diagonally across the inner forearm, with a row of small silhouetted birds perched along it, growing denser towards the wrist end. The linework is delicate and solid black, with no shading or colour. The arm rests against a rough tree trunk on the left, with a wooden fence and grass softly blurred in the background.

The generator had been coughing since Tuesday, so Ruth ran the cable herself, up the hedge line from the pole behind the church hall to the dodgems at the far end of Coldharbour Field. Her father had always said a fair lived or died by its wire, and he had never once been wrong about anything that could be measured in metres.

Halfway along the run the cable sagged between two poles, and a row of starlings had settled on it like notes on a stave. Ruth stopped with the reel on her hip to count them. Eleven at the near pole, fourteen at the far, and more arriving every time she blinked, until the wire bowed under them and the light went copper behind the big wheel.

Dad's rule was that birds on a line meant weather coming, and weather meant the lights would fail mid-song. So she hurried, bent to the clamps, and the birds shifted their feet and watched her work without any fear. A man in a flat cap came over the stile to ask whether the wheel would run for the evening crowd. She told him yes, and he tipped his cap at the birds as though they had paid to be there.

The wheel turned that night on the current she had carried through the damp hedges. When they packed up on Sunday the field was flat and the grass was printed with lorry tracks, but one bird had stayed on the last yard of wire by the pole nearest the caravans, its shadow thin as a pencil stroke, waiting for someone to tell it the fair was over.
