Cursive quotation on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A diagonal line of black cursive script reads across the inner forearm, set against pale skin and a dark background. The linework is thin and even, with flowing loops on the capital letters and consistent letter spacing. The text fills most of the frame, with the lettering ending on the lower right.

Dear Hilary, I am writing this on the bench outside the lost property hatch because the 17.42 to Carlisle has been cancelled twice and the porter says a third time is likely. You asked me to put down what happened with the boy, so here it is before the tannoy takes the rest of my thoughts.

His name was Tomas and he was seven. Every Thursday in March he stood on tiptoe at the hatch and asked whether a blue knitted scarf had been handed in from the 6.10 out of Leeds. Every Thursday I said no, because there was no scarf, only a list in my drawer. The second week he brought me a drawing of it, with the fringe done in careful loops, and beneath it, in pencil, the words and she loved a little boy very very much. I asked who she was. He said she was the one who knitted it, and that she had gone to sit by the sea.
On the last Thursday a driver from Doncaster came in with a carrier bag, and inside was a blue scarf, long and lumpy, with a loose thread at one end. I had not logged it, so I did it then, in front of Tomas, while he watched the pen move across the form. When he took it he didn't say thank you. He wound one end twice round my wrist and told me she would want me to have the end, and then he ran off to catch his dad at the barrier.
I have the drawing pinned above the kettle now. When you're back on Thursday, tell me whether I should keep the scarf in the drawer or let the next person who asks have it. The train is here. Yours, Margaret.
