Ruth had the last northbound on the board and nobody on the platform to meet it. The signal lamp at the end of Carrick Junction had turned green an hour before its time, and she had stopped trying to explain it to the porter, who had gone home to his tea.

The valley said the cutting had been blasted through the back of something that slept under the embankment. The navvies who dug it swore a tail as long as a goods train lay coiled beneath the spoil heaps, and that the first man to whistle near the points woke it. Ruth had been raised on such talk. She had never believed a word, and she had never once whistled in that cutting.

At twenty past eleven the wind swung round from the moors and the green light spread along the rails, fading to white at the edges like breath on a cold window. Something unfolded above the water tower, a wing spread wide with its tips sharp as a split nib, black against the stars. It did not come down. It hung over the points and turned its narrow head towards the lamp, as if reading it.

Ruth lifted her own lamp and swung it twice, the way her father had taught her to signal a clear road. The wing dipped in answer. Then it wheeled north over the fells and was gone, and the northbound came round the bend exactly on time, which was the strangest thing of all. She wrote in the log, Line clear, and underlined it twice.
