You had the lantern in one hand and the sack of salt in the other when the path forked the way old Mrs Tulley had warned you never to take, the one that dipped under the hazel where the village ended and the trees began. The frost had come early that year, and it lay on the bracken in grey plates that cracked under your boots like something breaking out of its shell.

Your father had said the dragon lived in the ash grove past the boundary stone, and that you were too old to believe in it. You believed now. Black shapes hung between the trunks: a horned head turned towards you, a ridge of spines along a back that was only a fallen bough, claws gripping the roots of a beech. Where the moon came through the branches, white edges split the dark, sharp as the cut lines on a carved spoon. Something breathed, slow, and the frost on the nearest twig went to water.

You set the salt down on the stone, because that was what Mrs Tulley said you owed it for crossing. Then you waited. The tail lifted out of the dark, a long curl ending in a tip that flickered like a torch that had forgotten how to burn. It did not touch you. It only drew a line through the frost on the boundary stone, one curl and then another, until the stone was ringed with shapes that would not melt.

In the morning the village found the salt gone and the ring still there, bright and black on the white ground. You walked home by the long road with the lantern cold in your hand, and nobody asked where you had been. Your father never asked either, but he left the gate by the orchard open after that, so the dragon could come and go as it pleased.
