Black and grey dragon across a back

Japanese · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large dragon with horns, whiskers and clawed feet curls from the shoulder blades down the spine and across the lower back. The linework is fine and detailed, with scales, mane and smoke rendered in layered grey shading that gives the figure depth. The image is in black and grey only, with the bare skin and a plain indoor background framing the design.

The lorry has been idling at the barrier since the church bells struck eleven, and you have already stamped forty passports tonight. The driver's paperwork is in order and the manifest says bolts and bearings, yet the customs dog keeps turning toward the back doors and whining low in its throat. You lift the seal with your penknife. Inside, between crates of steel, something lies coiled on a tarpaulin, as long as a bus and grey as wet slate.

It is not a dragon, you tell yourself. It is a carving from a temple roof, a thing for a museum. Then its eye opens, and smoke leaks from its nostrils and curls up toward the strip lights like a question. Its whiskers stir. The driver is already at your elbow, saying in careful English that the piece belongs to his grandmother's village and must reach the coast before the tide, or the river will come up the valley and take it back.

You ask for the form that covers livestock. There isn't one. You ask for the form for antiquities. He hands you a folded map instead, inked by hand, showing a river that runs up the spine of the mountains to a cave marked with a small flame. Your stamp hovers above the paper. The dragon lifts a clawed foot, slow as a turning tide, and sets it down on the tarmac with a sound like a struck bell. Beyond the barrier the river is rising, its mist climbing the poles.

You stamp the form. The dragon exhales a long grey cloud that rolls across the lamps, and when it clears the tarpaulin holds only a single scale the size of your palm. You pocket it without deciding to. In the morning the manifest still reads bolts and bearings. The dog sleeps easily now, and somewhere under the road you can hear water running, patient and very far down.
