Black and grey forearm tattoo with script on hand
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a hand resting on a steering wheel and a forearm covered in a large tattoo. The forearm design appears to use dark outlines and grey shading, while the script on the back of the hand is faint and hard to read. The image has a shallow depth of field, with a blurred dark background and bright highlights, and it shows a brown leather watch strap and a smartwatch.

Nell had driven the Ardmore bus for nineteen years and knew every passing place on the single-track road by its stone. At ten past six the mist came off the moor in rags, and she took the bend below the chapel with the headlamps throwing grey light onto wet hedges. Her brother's letter sat folded in the door pocket, unopened since Tuesday.

The island's only shop had a noticeboard, and someone had pinned up a photograph of the old lifeboat crew, twelve men in oilskins with the sea behind them dark as slate and feathered with white. Nell had always thought the picture was about courage. Lately she thought about the spray lifting off the swell like wings, and how the men leaned into the wind as if it were a rope they could haul.
At the Kilbride crossing a ewe stood in the road and would not move. Nell sat with the engine ticking, watching the animal chew, and thought of Euan, who had left on the last ferry at seventeen and never once come back for the Christmas boat. She had been sure the letter would ask for money. Instead it was a list of his new town: a harbour, a bakery, a woman who laughed too loudly at her own jokes.
The ewe wandered off. Nell let the clutch out and the bus rolled on toward the pier. By the time the ferry's lights came up over the water she had the letter open on the seat beside her, and she read it through once, slowly, the way you trace a line you mean to follow. Then she folded it, put it in her coat, and drove on past the pier road, leaving the bus to the rain.
