Colourful leaf tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A hand is raised against a pale grey background, showing a forearm covered in a tattoo of leaves and flower shapes. The shading uses soft greens, yellows and blues with darker outlines, and the tattoo runs up past the wrist out of frame. The shallow focus keeps the wrist and bracelets sharp while the hand softens.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, the bread's still warm and the bride has stopped crying into the trifle long enough for me to talk. You want the story of Nell Harrow and the green hedge? Then hush, because I only tell it at a wedding, and only once.

Nell's father would not have the miller's boy, Tom Ashby, because Tom owned nothing but a cart and a good whistle. So Nell, who was clever with her hands, took a stub of pencil and every leaf she could lift from the hedgerows of Dunmere and pressed them between the pages of her mother's psalter. Ash went yellow in the first week. Sorrel stayed sour green. The chicory blue at the stile she pressed the whole length of one April afternoon, and her fingers went purple to the wrist for a fortnight after.

When her father finally opened the book, looking for a hymn, he found no complaint in it at all, only a garden. Every leaf was labelled in her hand with the day Tom had said the thing that made her laugh. He read the lot standing at the dresser, turning the pages slow, and then he closed the psalter, put it back on the shelf, and went out to find the boy's cart himself.

So raise your glasses to the pressed leaves, and to the boy with the whistle, and mind the chicory if you're handling the book. It stains for years.
