Black and grey mandala on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala design covers the forearm, with a central eight-pointed star surrounded by layered petal shapes and geometric rings. The work is built from fine linework and dense stippled dotwork shading, which gives the sections depth and a soft grey tone. The photo has two panels, a front view and a side view, both with a plain light background and the subject's torso and hand partly visible.

The pattern came back from Mrs Tully's kitchen with three petals gone soft at the edges, and Nell knew before she unfolded it that the fault was hers. She had drafted the star by eye, not by compass, because her father always said a compass lied about the eighth point. Now the paper showed it plainly. Seven points closed neatly, and the eighth wandered off towards the margin like a dog that had heard its name.

She sat with the lamp turned low and laid the sheet over the lace board. Pins went in along the outer ring, one every half inch, and she worked the stipple with the finest needle in the tin, pricking a dot for every grain of pepper she could imagine, until the centre went from white to a soft grey in the lamplight. Her mother used to say dotwork was only patience with its sleeves rolled up. Nell had never believed it until the rings began to hold each other.
By the time the kettle had cooled twice, the eighth point was true. She had not redrawn it. She had found the pricked line already there beneath the wandering one, a faint ghost where her father's compass had been, and she followed it the way you follow a stair in the dark.
Before the window greyed she pinned the last petal and held the whole thing up to the glass. Light came through the holes and made a small bright star on the far wall, and she left it there until the milk van rattled past.
