Dotwork mandala on upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A round mandala design sits on the outer upper arm, built from fine dots and radiating petal and teardrop shapes around a central eight-pointed star. The shading is made entirely of stippled black dots, giving soft grey gradients across the petals and a dense, detailed border. The person wears a striped top and a lace bra strap, with the tattoo centred in the frame against plain skin.

By the last season the Pyke Brothers Travelling Show had shrunk to one tent, two ponies and a sawdust ring that was never quite the same size twice. Every night, after the final bow and the last cold chip had been eaten behind the generator, Laurence Pyke knelt at the edge of the ring with a six-inch nail and began to dot.

He started at the centre, a small eight-pointed star no wider than my palm, then worked outward in rings. Petals first, then the teardrops that hung off them like drops from a tap, then a border of tiny close-set holes that he said would hold the whole thing together when the rest of us came apart. I held the torch. He never once used a ruler. 'A circle's honest,' he told me. 'It can't hide a crooked line.'
The council sold the field in October and gave us until the Saturday. On the Friday I found him at the ring with a rake, levelling the sawdust in long, patient strokes until there was nothing left, and I asked why he was wiping it out himself. He said the ground had been decent to us and ought to be handed back clean.
We packed up under a grey sky. Driving past the gate I looked back and saw the field lying flat and pale, but when the low sun caught it, the faint pattern of dots showed through the rake marks, thousands of them, each a small pit where the nail had gone in. Laurence was asleep in the cab. I didn't wake him. Some things only show once the crowd has gone home.
