The tattoo shows two plumeria flowers, one upper left and one larger on the right, with curling scrolls and dotted stems linking them across the skin. The petals are outlined in fine black lines and shaded with soft grey gradients, giving them volume. The design is in black and grey ink and sits diagonally across the lower torso, with a dark waistband and teal fabric visible at the edges of the frame.

The cutting has been wrapped in wet muslin for nineteen days, and you carry it through the spine of Halden Ark like a bad egg, past sealed hatches where grey dust has settled into the seams. Nobody on the lower decks remembers a flower that wasn't printed on a ration wrapper. Your grandmother did. She swore plumeria could root from a snapped twig pushed into bad soil, if you were patient and lied to it about the weather.

The greenhouse is a bent drum of salvaged glass at the stern, lit by a single strip that hums at the pitch of a kettle. You clear a space among the blackened ferns and press the twig into the grit. Each morning you count the little knots along the stem, the ones that swell like beads on a wet thread, and each morning you tell yourself they are buds and not the dead weight of your hope.

On the twelfth morning the lamp flickers, the hull shudders as the ark turns its face toward a star nobody has named, and when you look again there is a flower. It is pale at the edges and dark at the heart, folded like something that remembers shadow better than sun. Its petals curl open the way the scrolls curl on the old paper charts, as if the plant had been drawn before it was grown.

You do not wake the others. You sit on an upturned crate and watch it open for an hour, then you break off a second twig, wrap it in muslin, and label it with your grandmother's name in careful capitals. Somewhere ahead, past the dust, there must be ground that will take it.
