Mom script in a heart with green flowers
Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the word Mom in grey script across a heart-shaped ribbon, with the ribbon ends curling into scrolls. Green five-petal flowers with dark centres and green leaves trail along the heart's edge on both sides. The ribbon uses soft grey shading and dark outlines, while the flowers and leaves are filled in green, and the photograph is a close, straight-on view against plain skin.

Ada was sent up the hill with a spade, a loaf wrapped in cloth, and strict instructions not to look back at the lamp in the window. The lane was steep and the hedges were stiff with frost. At the top stood the old thorn, and under it, where nothing had grown in living memory, a ring of green flowers had opened in the night, five petals each, with dark centres like thumbprints in wet clay.

Her mother had worked the night ward at the infirmary across the river for twenty-two years and had never once been late for a shift. Every evening she walked down the hill with her bag on her shoulder, and every morning the ribbon wound round the gatepost had slipped a little further from its knot, the word on it fading to a grey smudge. The village said the thorn kept count. Ada did not believe the village, but she dug where the roots were thinnest, because she had been told that was where the old things went to sleep.
Under the earth she found a tin box. Inside was a pair of spectacles, a ferry ticket gone soft at the corners, and a folded note in her mother's hand that read only: sit with them, the rest follows. So Ada sat on the cold ground with the bread in her lap and the tin beside her, and she did what her mother did for strangers on the ward, which was to hold a hand and keep talking until the dark had nothing left to say.
At first light the bell rang across the water, the one they rang when a night nurse walked out of the gates. Ada looked down at the flowers. Every petal was open, and the ribbon on the gatepost had loosened all the way round, ready for someone to tie it again.
