Black and grey rose and sunflower on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A rose and a sunflower are shown in shaded black and grey ink on the upper arm, with the rose sitting near the shoulder and the sunflower below it. The petals are rendered with soft gradients and fine detail, and dark leaves frame the rose on the right. The photo is taken at an angle, with a white tank top and a blurred indoor background around the arm.

The frost came to Low Brenner before the last of the beans were in, and it took the sunflowers first. Mared Pike walked the south wall every morning with a bucket of ash and a candle lantern, because her grandmother had said the heads would hold their seed if they were kept from the cold until they dried. Her brother thought this was foolishness. He said so over the gate, with his breath smoking, and went off to the milking without waiting for an answer.

The wall was lined with tall stalks gone grey at the edges, their faces bowed to the ground like a row of clocks that had stopped. Mared worked her way along them slowly. At the far end, under the eaves of the old byre, a single rose had come up through the flagstones the summer her mother died, and nobody had had the heart to pull it. It was still flowering. Its outer petals were papery and brown, but the heart was tight and dark and perfect, and when she brushed the frost from it the cold went straight into her fingers.
She knelt and cupped her hands around it for a long while. Then she fetched the lantern and sat beside the rose until the sun cleared the ridge, and by then the sunflowers along the wall had lifted their heads a little, the way they always did when the light reached them. Her brother, coming back with the pails, stopped at the gate and said nothing at all.
