Three roses and a bud on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of three full-blown roses and a closed rosebud, with dark leaves and fine stems, is tattooed on the outer thigh. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading and fine dark linework, giving them depth and a realistic volume. The design sits centrally on the thigh, with a dark shaded halo behind the blooms and denim shorts visible at the top of the frame.

Mr Aske has finally gone up to London with his charcoal tins and his wet boots, so I have the back bedroom to myself again. You will forgive the smudge on this page. The fog came in off the harbour before breakfast, the way it does in November, and I could not see the yard wall from the scullery window until it burned away at ten.
He spent every grey morning out there with the three old roses that climb the bricks behind the coal shed. The gale stripped the colour from them last month, and he said the sea does that to everything given time, so he meant to draw them while they still had shape. He worked in pencil, then went over it with something black and soft that got on his cuffs and my good tablecloth alike.
He owed me nine weeks. On the last morning I found a sheet of paper folded under the teapot. Three full roses and a bud, closed tight at the top like a fist, every petal shaded so the light seemed to sit on the edges. Underneath he had written, Keep this one shut until the spring, Mrs Penhallow.
I have pinned it above the hall table, where the lodgers wipe their feet on the way out to the pier. Not one of them has asked what the roses cost him. I told them the account was settled, and I have not yet decided whether that is true.
Your loving sister, Ada
