Black and grey rose forearms with a key

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are pressed together against a plain grey background, each carrying a large black and grey rose. The left arm has a key beneath the rose with dark drips and splatter, while the right arm shows an ornate scrolled element and splatter near the wrist. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients across the petals and strong contrast in the darker areas.

Mind the ice on the yard step, I'll not have you going down before the tale's started. The winter the Hollis farm lost its key, the big iron one for the root store under the orchard wall, old Dan Pardoe swore he'd hung it on the nail by the dairy door. The nail was bare come January, and the store held every apple we had left, so there was no sleep in that house for a week.

They turned out the straw and the feed bins and the pockets of every coat. Then Mary Hollis, who had been short-tempered since the frost took the hives, carried a lantern out at dusk and walked the length of the wall. Where the brambles had gone black along the old rose trellis, she found the key lying in the frozen soil, its bow scrolled like a fern, with a dark streak of mud down the shank as if something had dragged it there.

Nobody could say who had moved it. Dan blamed the fox, Mary blamed the wind, and the youngest lad, Ned, blamed nobody and went quiet for three days. When the store door finally swung open, the cold came out to meet us smelling of cider and cut grass, and on the top shelf, wrapped in brown paper and tied with red wool, sat a single dried rose that Tom Hollis had pressed the summer before he died.

Mary took it down, held it to the lantern, and said nothing at all. That was the only time I ever saw her cry.
