Black and grey realism tattoo of a skull merged with a rose, with two leaves, on the forearm.

Skull and rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A skull is formed from the petals of a rose, with the bloom making up the cranium and an open jaw below. The shading is smooth and realistic, with deep blacks and soft grey highlights along the petal edges and leaves. The design sits on the forearm against pale skin, with a white shirt blurred in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band at the Imperial Rooms has been grinding through the same foxtrot since eight, and you have stopped counting the couples who drift past with their eyes shut. Hettie wears the red rose you bought her from Sayer's barrow outside the station, pinned at her shoulder, and each time she turns the petals catch the light and go a little darker, as if they are remembering something. You told yourself it was the cheap dye. You are not sure you believe that.

Sayer had watched you choose. He did not wrap the bloom. He turned it in his fingers, peeled back one outer petal, and said the trick with roses was knowing which ones were already dying from the inside, because those held their shape longest. He said it the way a man gives directions to a railway platform. You paid him threepence and felt, absurdly, that you had been let in on something.

Now the band slides into a slow number, and Hettie leans close enough that her cheek brushes the stiff collar of your jacket. Her breath smells of gin and Parma violets. Above the bar the clock says ten to eleven, and the rose on her shoulder has opened wider, its petals curling back until the centre looks hollow, like a place where a face ought to be. She laughs at something you have not said. Her teeth are very white.

At the final chord you steer her towards the open doors, where Sayer's lamp swings over the empty barrow. One bloom is left in the bucket, leaning against the rim. You know without looking that it has been waiting for a partner, and that by morning you will be the one carrying it back to him.
