By half two the card tables had thinned to two, a pair of cousins from Attercliffe arguing over a pot of coppers, and the painted rose on the back wall had started to lose its red in the lamplight.

Dev came in at quarter to three with his sleeve rolled and a pack of cards he said he'd won off a drunk in the Moor car park. He laid them face up on the bar one at a time: queen of hearts, nine of spades, then the ace, soft at the corners from being handled. Nell didn't ask. She counted the cards the way she counted the float, and when she reached the ace she tapped it twice and said the house would take the pack for the price of a hot drink and a promise he'd stay out of the back room.

He didn't promise. He tipped his head at the clock and said it wasn't fast at all, it was four minutes behind, and she'd been wrong about that for eleven years. She told him a clock is only ever wrong about the time you're late for.

At dawn she walked the empty street with the pack in her coat, the ace warm against her ribs, and stopped at the florist's shutter where the first bucket of roses was going out. She bought one stem for the bar and, going back in, set the clock right so it would finally tell the truth.
