Clock and rose thigh sleeve
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo covers the outer thigh and runs down the leg, with a clock face on the left, a shaded rose at the centre and scrollwork at the top. Other elements on the right include ray-like shapes and a partly visible figure or portrait. The work uses smooth greyscale shading with fine highlights on a warm skin tone, photographed outdoors on a concrete step.

Iris Tallow knelt in the bed under the south wall, trowel in hand, while the church clock struck eleven beyond the yew hedge. It ran twenty minutes fast, as it had since 1962, and her father had never once let anyone fix it. The rose man from Stafford wanted the Albertine cut back by Friday, and she had promised him she would.

The garden had always been her father's argument with time. Every morning he wound the clock he kept in the potting shed, a brass carriage clock with a cracked face, then walked out between the beds to check the hands against the sun on the glasshouse panes. Where the light fell in bars across the gravel, he said, the day was honest. Pigeon feathers collected in the gutters of the barn, and he saved the grey ones for the bulbs he forced in January.
When she finally opened the clock case to set it right, a folded photograph slid out from behind the movement. A young man in a sailor's collar stared back at her with his chin up, and on the back, in her father's square capitals, was a single line: Stop it when the rose opens, not before. She looked at the bush against the wall, its outer petals just beginning to loosen, pale as paper in the glare.
Iris set the trowel down in the border and left the rose uncut. She turned the clock back to the sun, twenty minutes behind the church, and let the afternoon take as long as it liked.
