Black and grey roses and moth on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of three or four roses with leaves climbs the forearm, with a moth with spread wings sitting at the lower right of the design. The linework is dark and detailed, with soft grey shading on the petals and wings that gives the flowers volume. The photo is in black and grey only, with the arm held out against a neutral indoor background.

The roses on the cabin roof came out all at once that June, three open heads and a bud crowded against the chimney, and I knew the wet weather would have them browning by the weekend unless I got the cans out. I was on my knees at the back doors with a dented watering can when the moth came in past my ear and went straight for the paraffin lamp hanging over the gas stove.

It was a pale, dusty thing, the colour of old paper, and it batted at the glass until the wick flared and it dropped back onto the table. I had the jam jar and the postcard ready the way Dad taught me, slide it under, carry it out to the towpath. But every time I opened the doors it came back in over the cushions, and by the third time I'd stopped pretending I minded. The Trent was loud beyond the bank, a barge horn sounding twice down at Torksey, and the lamp hissed as though it were counting.

Ruth from the next boat moored up at dusk with a bag of coal and asked whether I was keeping a pet. I said I was keeping a visitor. She laughed and said moths on the river had always meant a good summer or a bad one, depending on who you asked. I didn't ask which her mother had said.

In the morning the lamp was cold and the moth sat on the cabin side, wings spread flat against the green paint, right beside the biggest rose, as if it had picked its spot in the night and meant to stay. I left the doors open and the cans by the step, and went to get the boat moving.
