Roses and birds up the thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical cluster of roses, peonies and buds climbs the outer thigh, with two small songbirds perched among the blooms. The linework is fine and the petals and leaves are softly shaded in greys, giving them depth. The design fills the left side of the frame against a plain, pale background.

Margaret Okonedo had been copying the same peony for three weeks, and the printer's boy kept asking why she didn't just buy a fresher one from the Covent Garden stall. The plate was for a seed merchant's catalogue, and the merchant wanted roses that would still look alive on a page printed in grey. She had nine sheets of tracing paper pinned to the drawing board, each one a little bolder than the last.

Tonight the gas lamps outside the workshop on Shad Thames threw long shadows across the cobbles, and the river smelled of tar. She sat with a sable brush and a saucer of Indian ink thinned to the colour of rain. The birds were the difficult part. Two wrens had come through the open window that morning, and one had stayed on the sill long enough for her to count its feathers. She drew it perched between the blooms with its head turned, as if it had been asked to wait.
By midnight the petals had depth. She had learned to leave the paper bare at the rims and let the wash pool darker at the base of each cup, the way light had lain across the bushes in the Chelsea garden where she first learned to look. The merchant would never know the bird came from a sparrow that had struck the glass and lain still on the step. He only wanted the roses to look as though someone could cut them and carry them home.
She signed the corner at two o'clock, blew on the ink, and left the window open so the sheet could dry in the cold air.
