Black and grey tattoos on a shirtless man in a cowboy hat
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless man wears a worn brown cowboy hat that hides his face, distressed white jeans, a silver belt buckle and leather work gloves. Black and grey tattoos cover his shoulder, upper arm and upper chest, with the linework and shading hard to resolve at this size. He stands outdoors beside a wooden panel and a sack on a concrete ground, with greenery behind him.

The hat had belonged to Aunt Dolores, who never once wore it in the rain, so by the time it came to me it had the colour of wet sand and a crease down the crown like a fold in a letter. I found it on a nail inside the feed store at Coldharbour, where the concrete floor was always damp and the sacks of pellets sweated through their weave. Nobody in the village wanted it, so I took it, along with a pair of gloves stiff as bark that I suspected she'd used on the gate chains.

That spring the wooden boards along the yard had gone grey and split, and Tomas, who mended everything for three parishes, said the only fix was to take them down and begin again. We spent a week at it. He worked the old panels loose with a crowbar while I stacked the sacks, and every evening he tipped his head back and looked at the hat on my head as though he expected it to tell him something about the timber.
On the last afternoon he paid me in a brass buckle he'd cast from a broken hinge, stamped with a horseshoe that didn't quite close. I still have it. The gloves I gave to the boy who swept the yard, and the hat I left on the nail where I found it, so the next person passing through would have something to puzzle over.
