Black triangle pattern band on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a shirtless torso shows a bare, muscular midriff and an arm bent with the hand resting on the hip. A band of black triangles in a repeating geometric pattern wraps around the forearm, with solid ink and clean edges. The image is in colour, with warm skin tones, a dark wristband and metal bracelets, and the background is softly out of focus.

The galley of the drifter Kittiwake smelled of tar, singed oats and wet wool the morning Agnes Rendall began pressing triangles into the bread. She used the wooden tally stick her father had carved, one notch for each man aboard, and the crust came out of the oven bristling with little peaks that the crew called teeth. Nobody asked why. Skippers on that coast did not ask cooks questions before a long haul.

The weather turned on the third night. The hull groaned and the lamp swung in its gimbal, and the mate, a sour young man named Donald Gunn, came down to complain that the bread was cold and the herring were gone. Agnes went on laying out the loaves in rows, counting the points under her breath, and told him the sea was reckoning up its debts and would take only what matched the pattern.
He laughed, but he stopped laughing when she showed him the stick. Every notch was a triangle pressed into the dough, and every triangle sat one row higher than the last, a stair climbing up the board. She had made the pattern run the way the swell ran, in ranks that rose and fell and rose again.
By dawn the wind had dropped and the Kittiwake limped into Lerwick with every man aboard. Agnes gave the crew their bread still warm and said nothing more. Gunn ate his loaf in silence, then cut the next one himself and pressed the points in as carefully as a surveyor, one peak after another, until the whole board was covered.
