Black and grey tattoos on arm, hip and thigh
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white studio photograph cropped below the chin, showing a woman in a cropped white T-shirt with a drum kit print. Dark tattoos cover her left upper arm and extend across her hip and thigh, with a rose-like design visible on the lower thigh. The shading is soft and greyscale, and the plain black backdrop keeps the focus on the skin.

Dear Tom,

The rose on the chapel wall has finally opened, the dark red one you planted the spring before you left, and Mrs Pryce says it is the only thing in the valley that has ever behaved itself. I have been out with the secateurs every morning since Tuesday, cutting back the suckers the way Dad showed us, though he never once let us near the blackspot. The wind has come round off the top of the pass, and the petals keep landing on the sill like wet paper.
The band's postcard came on Friday, the one with the seaside pier on the front. Your name is printed on the back in that neat list, drums, second from the bottom, and someone has written underneath in biro that the bass player has lost his passport in Lyon. I read it twice at the kitchen table, then put the kettle on and forgot it, and it boiled dry, and I stood there watching the steam crawl up the window.
Here is what I want you to do. When you reach the next town, find a florist and ask for a single bloom from whatever they keep for funerals. Tell them it is for a drummer. They will know what you mean, they always do. Press it between the pages of the hymn book the way Nan did, and post it to me in an envelope with no note, and I will know.
Love, Gwen
