Rose, rosary and eye tattoos on thighs

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a person's legs and hips, with several tattoos across both thighs and the hip. The largest design is a shaded black and grey rose with ornate script above it, and the right thigh shows a rosary, a hooded figure and an eye. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with the soft grey tones set against white underwear and a dark background.

The orchard ship Quiet Marrow has been drifting for three hundred years, and you are the one who walks its rose house with the shears. The dusk lamps hum overhead. Old Ilse taught you to count petals by touch and to speak over each graft in the old tongue, and the lettering on the bulkhead still reads Keep what grows. Tonight the shears go dull in your hand before the last cutting.

The rosary hangs on the hook beside the seed bank, forty beads of recycled glass, one for each generation the ship has carried. Nobody prays on it anymore. You thread it through your fingers anyway while the sensor eye above the hatch turns slowly, its lens the colour of a bruised plum, checking who comes and goes. Ilse said the eye was there to count us, not to judge. You have never been sure which is kinder.

Tonight a grey-hulled tender docks against the spur, and a man in a salvage coat steps through with a sealed case and a request. He wants the last black rose, the one that never opened, to sell to a broker on a station called Gallows Reach. Your name is on the manifest as keeper, but the rose was never yours to sell. You tell him the ship keeps what grows. He laughs, because he has read it on the bulkhead for weeks.

You take him to the seed bank and show him the empty pot where the black rose sat. Ilse had cut it herself the night before she died and hidden it inside the rosary's last bead, a hollow of glass no bigger than a grain. You press the bead into his palm. Let the broker come looking, you tell him, and see what a ship finds when it keeps its own counsel. The eye above the hatch turns to follow him out.
