Black and grey wave sleeve on a shoulder and upper arm
Japanese · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the shoulder and upper arm with swirling waves, curling wisps and flowing water forms. Bold black shapes sit against lighter grey shading and fine white highlights, giving depth and movement across the arm. The photo is taken against a dark background, with the design filling most of the frame and the subject's face cropped out.

"Mind the lamp, Teddy, it's swinging again," Ada said, and the bandleader only nodded, his eyes on the window where the Saltcombe wind was throwing spray against the glass in grey sheets. The Palais had been built for foxtrots, not weather, and tonight the sea had come up the promenade and found its way under the side doors, so the dancers were kicking off their shoes and stepping through a film of brine that shone under the chandeliers like spilled lacquer.

Nobody wanted to be the first to go home. Ada stood at the cloakroom hatch with a needle still threaded through her collar, mending a cape for the girl who sang with the band, and watched the floor lift and settle with the swell beneath the boards. Every time the wind dragged the big doors, a curl of cold air spun across the parquet and lifted the hems into loose, spiralling shapes, the same shapes she had been stitching into the lining all week: tight curls at the shoulder, long pale tongues trailing down the sleeve.
When the lights finally failed, the band kept going on candles and the emergency lamp over the exit. Teddy played the last waltz by ear while Ada walked out onto the floor in her stocking feet, feeling the water pull at her ankles. She stopped in the middle, where the sea had gathered into a dark, glossy pool, and found that it moved the way she had sewn it, rolling forward and folding back, catching the candlelight in white flecks. Somebody laughed. Then the whole room was swaying with it, and the wind outside was just another instrument.
