Pink poppies with watercolour splashes on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Two large magenta poppies sit across the upper arm and shoulder, with the main bloom shown from the side and a second bud below it. The flowers are shaded in a realistic way with soft gradients, while blue and pink watercolour washes and loose black lines sweep behind them. Colour ink dominates the design, with black used mainly for the linework and dark centres.

The barge Marigold had been towed through three locks before the bargeman's daughter noticed that the poppies along the far bank had turned red overnight, as though someone had spilled a pot of ink into the wheat. Her father, Tomas Vell, said it was only the rain and told her to keep the tiller steady through the cut.

At Hobb's Weir a stranger in a grey coat stepped aboard with a sketchbook and a bag of silver buttons. He asked for passage to the river mouth and offered the buttons as fare. Tomas refused them, so the stranger paid in drawings instead, pencil hissing across the page, black lines sweeping behind each bloom like wind through a hedge.
Every mooring after that, a new flower opened on the bank where his pencil had stopped. The girl counted seven by the time they reached Cobb Lane. When she asked him why, he said a flower opens wherever it is looked at long enough, and that most people look at the wrong things. She thought this was nonsense until the last lock, when he tore out the final page and the poppy on it was already dropping petals onto the water.
At the river mouth he stepped off onto the mud with his coat unbuttoned and walked away without looking back. The girl turned the barge around to follow, but the bank was bare grass and the reeds had gone quiet. Only then did she see, pinned under the tiller, the sketchbook, and on its last page a single poppy with a dark centre, shaded so carefully it seemed to breathe.
