Black cat skull with red poppies

Mixed · Flash

A black cat head is drawn in profile with its left eye showing as a pale grey orb, and the lower jaw and teeth are revealed as a cream skull. Three red poppies with green leaves and buds sit over the cheek and ear, with a thin golden halo above the ears. Smooth black fills, soft grey highlights and crisp red and green accents give the drawing a clean, illustrated finish on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ivy had been feeding the black cat on the eleventh-floor balcony of Calder House for three winters before she gave it a name, and even then it was only Vesper because the word was on the side of a tin of pilchards she had been meaning to throw out. Nobody in the block could say whose it was. Mr Okafor on the fourth floor swore it had belonged to the old caretaker, and the caretaker had belonged to nobody, so that settled nothing. The cat came when the lamps along Harrow Road flickered on, sat on the railing with its pale grey eye turned towards her kitchen window, and waited to be noticed.

One February it started bringing poppies. They were from the waste ground behind the bins, where the council had given up mowing, and the cat laid each one on the mat outside her door with the seriousness of a clerk filing papers. Ivy put them in a jam jar on the windowsill. The petals were thin as tissue and bled a little onto the glass. She began to think the cat was trying to tell her something, and then she decided it was only a cat, and that the poppies were a thing cats did, like leaving mice.

The council letter came in March. Calder House would come down by the summer, and the residents were to be rehoused in the new flats out past the retail park, with a lift that worked and a view of nothing in particular. Ivy read it twice at the table. When she went out to the balcony that evening, the railing was empty, and the jam jar on the sill had only one poppy left in it, already browning at the edges.

She left the window open that night. In the morning there was a single red petal on the mat, and beside it, set down neatly as a gift, a bud still green and tight with the promise of something she would not see until the summer.
