Sphynx cat in a geometric triangle mandala
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows a hairless sphynx cat head, tilted and shaded in fine graphite-style pencil with soft gradations on the face and large ears. It sits within a large outlined triangle filled with circular mandala motifs, radiating lines and a smaller ornamental fan shape hanging below. The drawing is entirely in black and grey with a centred composition on a plain white background.

Inspector Maud Ferrier had worked the passport desk at Dover for eleven years and had never once been asked to verify a cat's pedigree. The man in front of her, a thin Lithuanian with a canvas holdall, set it on the counter and unzipped it halfway. Something pale and wrinkled looked out, its ears spread like the sails of a dinghy, and it blinked at the strip light as if it had been expecting worse.

"Papers," she said. He handed over a folded sheet covered in circles and fine radiating lines, a pedigree drawn by hand by a breeder in Kaunas who, he said, did not trust printers. A triangle sat at the top of the page with a smaller triangle nested inside it, and a fan-shaped seal hung from the bottom like a pendant. Maud turned the sheet over. The back held a vaccination record in careful pencil, every date correct, and one name: Pelen\u0117.
She should have sent him to the secondary room. Instead she found herself tracing one of the rings with her thumbnail, the way her grandmother used to trace the rim of a teacup before telling a story nobody wanted to hear. "She doesn't like the light," the man said. "She likes the lines. She counts them." Maud looked at the cat, which was looking at the paper, its eyes fixed on the centre of the largest circle as if it could read the dates from where it lay.
She stamped the form and slid it back across the counter. The cat settled into the bag with a long, unimpressed sigh. Through the window a ferry lowered its ramp into the grey harbour, and the man zipped the holdall shut with exaggerated care. Maud watched the little car roll off towards the motorway, and just before it turned out of sight, she saw the animal lift its head and angle its ears toward the road ahead, counting the lines it could still see.
