Two black and grey floral tattoos, one on each forearm, in a traditional style with solid black leaves and detailed flower outlines.

Black floral tattoos on both forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A person with dark hair leans forward so their face is hidden, showing two forearms. The left forearm has a bouquet of open flowers with a smaller bud and large leaves, while the right forearm has a single bold flower surrounded by leaves near the elbow. The linework is bold and the leaves are filled with solid black, with grey shading and fine hatching on the petals and foliage against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been picking wasps out of the windfalls since six, and by eleven the orchard smelled of vinegar and cut grass. Her grandfather's ladder leaned against the Bramley at the far wall, and he was up it, fussing with a splint of hazel, insisting the graft would take if the sap was running.

Her sister Rhoda had come up from the city with a sketchbook full of rose hips and a plan to paint the packing shed before the buyers arrived. "Nobody buys fruit off a grey shed," she said, and pinned a sheet of lining paper to the boards. She drew a bloom the size of a dinner plate, five petals opened wide, a dark heart of stamens she shaded with hatching until the pencil shone.

Their grandfather came down the ladder slowly and studied the drawing for a long time. "Your great-grandmother grew single roses along the hedge," he said. "Blackest leaves in the county. She used to say the trick was to leave the centre alone." Rhoda asked what he meant, and he only tapped the paper where the hatching was densest.

By dusk they had filled the wall with a bouquet: an open bloom, a bud still closed, leaves as dark as rain on slate. Nell held the lamp while Rhoda worked the last leaf in. Next morning the buyers stopped at the shed door, and one of them asked who had done it. Nell shrugged and went back to the apples, pleased that the old shed finally looked like it had been waiting all along for something to grow on it.
