Black and grey flower cluster on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of three flower heads with leaves wraps around the outer forearm, with a large open bloom at the centre, a rounded rose-like flower below and a smaller bud above. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft grey shading that gives the petals depth. The image is in black and grey with no colour, shown against a dark top and a patterned skirt.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the coil of rope by your boot, it bites. Sit closer, the cold comes off the water after dark. You want the one about Ada Lark and the three roots, the one she swore was true, and she never once told a lie on this cut.

Ada worked the narrowboat Patience with her uncle Sol, carrying cut stems from the nurseries at Stoke down to the markets in Birmingham. Every spring she carried a crate that nobody else was allowed to touch. Inside, wrapped in wet sacking, were three roots her grandmother had brought over the water in a biscuit tin. One would be a rose, folded tight as a cabbage heart. One was a bud that had not decided yet. And one was the big open bloom, so wide it could have held a sparrow in its lap.

Sol said they would never take to English mud. He said it every morning at the tiller. Ada planted them anyway against the lock-keeper's wall, where the bricks held the sun until nine at night, and she watered them from the canal with a dented pan.

The rose came first, then the great bloom, which opened the same night a flood rolled up the cut and drowned the towpath. By morning the water had gone down, and the wall stood with its flowers shaking off the river like dogs. Sol took his cap off and did not put it back on for an hour. The bud, Ada kept in the crate. She never let it open. She said some things are only worth more shut.
