Black heart with red flowers on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A solid black heart with a pale dotted outline sits at the centre of the design, framed by three flowers with yellow centres and dark green leaves. The black fill is smooth and dense, and the flowers and leaves use bold black outlines. The palette is limited to black, red, orange, yellow and green, with the skin tone showing around the dotted border.

Dear Nell, We raised the Horn nine days ago and I have not been dry since. The bosun says the wind will turn by Sunday, which he has said every Sunday since Montevideo, so I have stopped listening and started carving instead.

The box is for you, though you will not get it until I am home, if I am home. It is pine from a spare boom, planed on my knee in the forecastle. I shaped the lid to a heart because you laughed at me for drawing hearts on the back of my wage slips, and I painted it black with the last of the hull paint we ran short of at Valparaiso. Along the rim I hammered brass tacks from the old stove, one every half inch, so it looks stitched shut. The poppies are for the red strip you tore from your mother's shawl the day I left. I could not get the red right, so I mixed ochre from the galley with the last of the vermilion, and Cook says it will do.
Last night the ship rolled so hard the lamp went out, and I heard something knocking from inside the lid. It was only the cargo shifting. I told myself so twice before I could sleep. I have wrapped the box in oilcloth and lashed it under my bunk, where it cannot go over the side.
When you open it, lift the lid from the back, where I have scratched my initial. The poppies will be a bit crooked. I did them by feel, which is how I do everything worth doing. Yours, Tom. P.S. Tell your mother the shawl was never the same after I borrowed it, and I am sorry for that too.
