Hands holding a heart with yellow flowers

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A red heart with a cream dotted outline is framed by two hands that meet at its centre, with the hands shaded in brown and grey. Three yellow five-petal flowers and green leaves wrap around the lower right edge of the heart, with a partial dark design visible at the bottom of the frame. The bold black outlines and flat solid fills of red, yellow and green sit against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the kingdom of Caddery, where the rivers ran slow and the bells were heavier than horses, the founder Maud Penhallow had one rule: no mould was left alone while the metal set. Her two apprentices, Tobin and the younger Ines, learned why the winter the furnace sulked and the bronze began to cool in the wrong order.

The bell was meant for the chapel at Sallow Ford, and the parish had paid for a heart-shaped one because the old lord's wife had asked for it before she died. Halfway through the pour the clay cracked along one lobe. Maud shouted. Tobin let go of the iron clamp to reach for a rope, and Ines, who had only ever followed, pressed both palms flat against the hot cheek of the mould and held the two halves shut by strength alone.

They held it until dusk. Ines's palms blistered, so Tobin wrapped her wrists in wet linen and took the far side without being asked. The two of them stood with their hands meeting over the seam while Maud packed the crack with wax and pressed buttercups from the ditch into the soft clay for luck. When the bronze was finally cool, the bell gave one clear note, and the flowers had left yellow prints in the metal.

The chapel still rings it on feast days. Nobody in Sallow Ford remembers the lord's wife's name, but on the rope side there are two shallow hollows the size of palms, and the ringers still set their hands there before they pull.
