Black lace bow with red ribbon on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a large bow made of black lace with white dotted edging and heart-shaped cutouts, with two red ribbon tails and a faceted red gem at the centre knot. The lace is shaded in greys with fine mesh detail, while the red ribbons carry bold shading and highlights. The bow fills the frame on bare skin, with the tails sweeping downwards.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are threading the last black spool when the mending hall lights dim to amber, the way they do before the spin-down. Old Mireille, who taught you the bobbin stitch, always said lace was only holes held together by good intentions. She said it while she pinned a red ribbon to the hatch of the nursery corridor, the first bow you ever watched being tied, and told you it meant the children were allowed to run.

Ship time has no weather, so the bows were how the decks marked the seasons. Black for mourning, which the Ardent Lantern did often in its first century. White for a birth. Red for the days the hydroponics bay came back green. The hearts in the lace were Mireille's own signature, each one cut open so the work could breathe. Nobody aboard had seen a sky in four generations, but everyone knew the look of a window.

The gem at the knot came from the observation dome, the last pane they unbolted before the dome was sealed for good. You set it yourself, with a jeweller's loupe and a hand that would not stop shaking, and when the council sent word that every ribbon on the ship was to be unpicked for the reroute burn, you said nothing and kept sewing.

Tonight you carry the finished bow down to the outer airlock, past the dark cabins and the hum of the drives. You tie it to the hatch wheel with the last of the red. Whoever comes through from the cold will find lace first, then a gem, and they will know people lived here who made pretty things for no reason but to make them. The tails lift in the vent draft and point toward a star you have never seen.
