Red rose with black lace bow on upper back

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A red rose with shaded grey highlights sits above a black lace bow with floral cut-out patterns and fine mesh detail. The rose has smooth, realistic shading, while the lace uses crisp black linework and open motifs. The tattoo is centred on the upper back, with the skin lit warmly against a dark surrounding vignette.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pattern was due at the coach office by Friday, and by Wednesday night I had forty bobbins still clicking on the pillow and a rose I had no business drawing into the border. Mother said roses were for cards, not for collars. I told her a collar is only a rose that has agreed to behave.

The rose came from Tom Ashby's garden wall, a red bloom he left on my step with the thorns still on it. I pricked my thumb sketching it. The lace I made to sit beneath it was a bow, two loops and two long tails, each tail worked in a close mesh with little open flowers cut into it like windows. Mr Pell at the shop wanted plain ground. I gave him the flowers anyway.

On the Thursday the bow went wrong at the cross. A pin had slipped and the mesh bunched like a frightened hen. I sat with the pillow in my lap until the lamp guttered, unpicking one flower at a time, and by four in the morning the tail lay flat and true again. Nobody in the shop ever noticed the repair. That was the point of good work.

When the pattern went out on the Friday coach, I kept a single offcut folded in my apron pocket. It was the length of a finger, one open flower and a scallop of ground. I still carry it. Tom asked once what it was for, and I told him it was the bit that held the rose up.
