Black lace tattoo on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a black lace-pattern tattoo covering a forearm, with a second lace panel below it on the same arm. The lace motifs include scrolls, scalloped edges, open mesh and floral shapes, drawn with fine, dense linework and solid black fill. The ink is solid black against pale skin, and the crop is close, with a dark fabric background.

The frost had come in the night and drawn itself across the inn's one good window, and Marta stood with her thumb on the glass trying to read it. Her mother had made bobbin lace in the valley before the mill took the work, and she had taught Marta to see patterns in everything: in the ruts of a cart road, in the stitches of a hedge, in the tracery ice made on a pane. This frost had scrolls and scalloped edges, and where the sun had not yet reached it, an open mesh like a net a fish had given up on.

A stranger came in out of the drifts that afternoon, a carter with no cart, a roll of paper under his coat. He asked for a room and a fire, and then for Anneke, the pattern-maker's widow who lived at the top of the hill road. Nobody had seen her since Martinmas. He unrolled the paper on the bar: a pricking pattern, pinholes in careful rows, looping leaves and a border of small wheels. "She promised her husband this for the spring," he said. "I'm told it was never finished."
That night Marta climbed the hill with a lantern and found the cottage door drifted shut. Inside, on the table, sat a lace pillow with its bobbins still hung and a half-worked edge pinned in place. The thread had frozen grey, but every mesh was closed where it should be. Marta sat down because her hands were cold and the work was there, and she followed the holes in the paper by lantern light until the wheels closed into their circles.
By morning the carter had gone and the snow had stopped. The finished edge lay on the bar where she had left it, weighted by a mug. Sun came through the window and laid the pattern across the wood, scroll over scroll, the shadows sharp as ink. Marta lifted the lace off the pillow and folded it into the book, and she did not ask again who had pricked the holes first.
