Floral lace thigh tattoos with feathers
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two thighs are shown in a black and grey photograph, each with a botanical design of flower clusters, leaves and lace-like scrollwork. Delicate dotted chains hang down from the flowers, ending in feather motifs shaded with solid black and soft grey. The linework is fine and detailed, and the pattern wraps down the outer thigh and across the lower leg, with the tattoos mirrored between the two legs.

Doreen Platt had been counting the feathers on her balcony rail since March, and by the second week of May she had stopped blaming the pigeons. Someone was leaving them there on purpose, a grey one one morning, a mottled brown the next, laid out along the painted metal as if they had been dealt. She kept them in an old biscuit tin under the sink, beside the spare fuses and the birthday candles.

Her mother's net curtains still hung in the kitchen window, scalloped and edged with a lace of tiny flowers. Every afternoon the sun came through them and threw the same pattern across the lino, sprigs and leaves and little beaded drops. Doreen had taken to tracing it with one finger, the way other people touched a rosary. Through the wall came the thump of a lad in flat 04 learning the drums, badly, over and over.
On Thursday she rode the lift down, which smelled of bleach and someone's chips, and knocked on his door. His gran answered, not him. "The feathers," Doreen said. The woman looked at her for a long moment, then up the stairwell towards the roof. "He's been climbing out for them," she said. "Says you were short of a few."
That evening a length of cream nylon was hung over her doorknob, edged with the same small flowers and strung with dark beads, and tied to the bottom were four brown feathers in a row. Doreen held it up to the kitchen window. The light came through, and the lace of the curtain and the lace of the cloth lay one over the other, and for once the pattern looked complete.
