Black mandala tattoo on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular mandala design with a central eight-pointed star, surrounded by layered petal shapes and small leaf motifs. The linework is fine and dotted shading fills the outer petals, giving a stippled texture. The tattoo is in black ink on pale skin against a plain light wall, with the crop showing the upper arm and part of the torso.

Now sit closer, you that came up the hill in the wet, and mind the loose stone by the gate, for it has taken better walkers than you. This is the tale of the rose window at Harrowmere, the one the wind has not yet managed to take. Most folk think a lord commissioned it, but it was Ada Quill, the mason's girl, who did the work, for her father's hands had gone to shaking by then and he could not hold a point steady.

She cut the petals first, all twelve of them, and then she stippled their outer edges with a hammer and a nail so they would take the light the way cloth does. It took her one whole winter. Every evening she came down from the scaffold with her knuckles bloody and sat by the forge counting the dots she had made, because counting kept her from thinking about the men who had not come back from the border.

In the centre she put a star with eight points. Her father asked why eight and not the sensible six, and she said the eighth was for whoever had to walk the long road home alone. He did not argue. He had lost a brother to that same road.

When the south wall came down in the great storm the year after, the rose window was the only thing left standing above the rubble. Now, when the sun comes up over the moor, it pushes its light through that stone and lays the star across the chapel floor, every petal sharp as a blade. Watch, now. There. The shepherds step into it on their way to market, one point at a time, and not one of them has ever walked it alone.
